Goals

The primary goals of the national, state, and local (chapter) mental health associations are:

  1. Prevention of mental illness.
  2. Promotion of mental health.
  3. Improvement in the care and treatment of those suffering with mental and emotional illness.

These goals are accomplished through many varied programs based upon local, state, and national needs.

History

In 1909 Clifford Beers, a recovered mental patient, formed the National Committee for Mental Hygiene. Aided by William James, the Father of American Psychology, Beers and his committee combined with two other groups to form the National Association for Mental Health- known today as the National Mental Health Association. The symbol of the NMHA is a liberty bell. A bell, which was cast from actual chains and shackles used in mental institutions, rests in the lobby of the NMHA headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, as a reminder of the progress made in the treatment and care of the mentally ill. Inscribed on the bell is this passage "Cast from shackles which bound them, this bell shall ring out hope for the mentally ill and victory over mental illness."

Finances

The MHA is a non-profit organization that provides free services. Funds are received through individual contributions, fundraising events, membership dues, bequests and memorials, United Way, District 12 business grants and allocations, and Dept. of Children and Families. The Mental Health Association affiliates directly with the National Mental Health Association, Inc. The association contributes to research for the "mentally ill" through its NARSAD participation.
Donations are always welcome and are tax deductible.
